Devon Home Choice - choice based lettings

Choice based letting is a way of allocating social rented homes that enables housing applicants to show their preferences by selecting or bidding for advertised homes.

Central government requires all local authorities to have adopted this way of working by 2010.

Devon Home Choice is a partnership of the ten district and unitary councils in Devon which has agreed to develop a sub regional choice based lettings scheme to cover all social lettings in Devon.

The partnership has successfully received government funding to support this.

Devon Home Choice will provide a shared assessment policy and common housing register.

The assessment policy closely reflects the existing Plymouth Tenancy Allocation policy by using five housing need bands:

  1. Emergency housing need - band A
  2. High housing need - band B
  3. Medium housing need - band C
  4. Low housing need - band D
  5. No housing need - band E

All vacancies are advertised on the Devon Home Choice website. Applicants are able to view property adverts on the Devon Home Choice website, at Midland House, on digital television, at libraries, housing offices and a number of partner organisations. Bids for homes will be able to be made through the website, digital television, a multilingual telephone service and at housing offices.

Bidding outcomes are published for each advert so that applicants can have feedback to help understand which properties they are likely to successfully bid for.

Devon Home Choice is the choice based letting solution for Plymouth as part of a sub regional scheme. The scheme is common across Devon and provides choice based lettings in a transparent, easy way.
