Bookings and opening times

The Record Office operates a booking system, to ensure that people aren't disappointed if they visit us, and are unable to use our facilities because they are in use.

We advise anyone to book at least one week in advance.

Bookings can be made in person, by telephone, email pwdro@plymouth.gov.uk or letter, and you will receive confirmation of your booking.

Please be advised that a booking is required for each person wishing to use the Record Office.

Opening times

  • Monday - Closed
  • Tuesday - 9.30am to 5pm
  • Wednesday - 9.30am to 5pm
  • Thursday - 9.30am to 5pm
  • Friday - 9.30am to 4pm

First time users

New users of the Record Office will need to register and provide proof of identity which includes your name and address. Examples of acceptable forms of identification include:

  • driving licences
  • utility bills
  • pension books
  • CARN (County Archives Research Network) tickets

UK passports do not normally show addresses and are therefore not acceptable. Don't forget to bring a pencil (no pens please as these are not allowed in the Record Office). Your signature on the registration form implies an undertaking to observe the rules of the search room. Please contact us for further details.

The booking system

A booking system operates for users of the Record Office. Bookings can be made up to one month in advance. You can book either a table space or to use the microfiche and microfilm during each day. Booked slots not taken up within thirty minutes of their start time may be given to someone else.

Charges

There are no longer any admission charges to use the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office.

We have a list of charges for photocopying and for using cameras in the search room.

Overseas users

Overseas users are asked to email pwdro@plymouth.gov.uk as far in advance as possible. Visitors who travel long distances to make casual visits may be disappointed. A list of archive researchers (record agents) is available to those unable to visit in person.
