Of the Parish of Stoke Damerel
A series of projects to make available on the Internet, details of the people who died in Devonport from the parish records of Stoke Damerel church.
Project 1: Milehouse overflow burial ground, Milehouse Road, Plymouth
Opened in 1871 and closed in 1961. A short history of the burial ground can be found on the Plymouthdata website. As part of the process of grave removal, the Central Electricity Generating Board photographed the remaining headstones. The photographs have been scanned by our volunteers. The digital images produced, along with the names of those listed on them can be searched and viewed on our Online Catalogue using the links below. The images are a valuable source of information for family and local historians and are available to purchase. If you would like to buy a copy of a headstone image please email pwdro@plymouth.gov.uk.

Project 2: Stoke Damerel churchyard burial ground, Paradise Road, Devonport
The earlist recorded burials in Stoke Damerel churchyard took place in 1595/1596 and were finally stopped in 1871. As part of the proceess of grave removal undertaken by the city in the 1950's, some of the remaining headstones were placed flat onto the ground to form footpaths around the churchyard. In 2009 a process began to move some of the headstones into new positions on a flatter area of the churchyard. The stones are currently being photographed by our volunteers and the details will be entered into the Online Catalogue.
