Plymouth baptism, marriage, burial and family history indexes

In partnership with the Devon Family History Society, we are indexing registers that contain information useful to family and local historians. The indexes can be viewed using our 'All Search' computer programme on our public computers in the Search Room. A number of the indexes are also available for sale on CD or as printouts.

Indexes available on the 'All Search' public computers

The following indexes can be viewed in the public search room of the Record Office using our All Search computer programme. The indexes are listed alphabetically by surname and first names and also show the date of event, church or location, page or entry number and notes. The programme is updated regularly and currently contains:

  • All marriages for Plymouth and West Devon from 1837
  • All baptisms for central Plymouth parishes from 1837 (Saint Andrew; Charles; Stoke Damerel; Saint George, East Stonehouse; Saint Pancras, Pennycross including Saint Martin)
  • All non-conformist births or baptisms from registers held.
  • Baptisms, marriages and burials for some parishes pre 1837 (mainly Saint Andrew and Charles in Plymouth)
  • Baptisms for some parishes outside of central Plymouth (All Saints; Christchurch, Estover; Saint Aidian; Saint Anne, Swilly; Saint Aubyn; Saint Augustine; Saint Barnabas; Saint Bartholomew; Saint Bartholomew Mission; Saint Boniface; Saint Budeaux; Saint Catherine; Saint Lo, Royal Dockyard Chapel)
  • Burials in Ford Park Cemetery, Plymouth from 1848 to 1869
  • Plymouth Prison, prisoners registers 1867 to 1930 (only the person's name and date of conviction have been indexed)
  • Wills (this is not a complete index of the wills we hold)
  • 1851 Census for Plymouth
  • Greycoat School, Plymouth, pupils
  • 1841 Tithe apportionment books, landowners and tenants (Saint Andrew; Charles; Compton Gifford; Saint Budeaux; Sheepstor)
  • Licensees of Public Houses, from the Plymouth Police, Chief Constable's report of 1903

The index does not cover events that took place in Catholic churches, Register offices, St. James the Less parish church (except 1941) or Saint George, East Stonehouse parish church between 1837 and 1852 for marriages and November 1887 to May 1941 for baptisms.

Baptisms, marriages and burials

The Plymouth parish register indexes gives details of Baptisms and Marriages held in Plymouth and West Devon Record Office from 1837 on three CDs. Each disk contains enough information to help you locate any entry held on microfiche or obtain a photocopy of it. You can do your research from home by using the CDs in combination with our copy on demand service.

  • Baptisms Volume One covers Church of England baptisms in Plymouth, Devonport and East Stonehouse.
  • Marriages Volume One covers Church of England marriages in Plymouth, Devonport and East Stonehouse.
  • Marriages Volume Two covers marriages in Church of England churches in West Devon, Non-conformist chapels and the Plymouth Synagogue.

None of the CDs cover events that took place in Catholic churches, Register Offices, Saint James the Less parish church (except 1941) or Saint George, East Stonehouse parish church between 1837 and 1852 for marriages and November 1887 to May 1941 for baptisms.

The Devon Family History Society have also produced five further disks which contain Baptisms 1813 to 1839, Marriages 1754 to 1834 and Burials 1813 to 1837. They are:

Shipping registers CD

For anyone interested in shipping, a CD is available called "Plymouth's Other Fleet, The Merchant Shipping Registers of the Port of Plymouth, 1814 to 1876". Printout service

Printouts are available from Volumes One and Two of the Plymouth Marriage Index, to anywhere world-wide.

This service is provided by the Devon Family History Society and can be combined with our copy on demand service to allow you to obtain photocopies of Plymouth and West Devon marriages from anywhere in the world.
