Military history

Britain’s Small Wars

Very comprehensive site dedicated to wars and military conflicts since 1945 in which British and Commonwealth service personnel were involved, with many links to veterans groups, associations and other sites.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission

The CWGC's website includes the Debt of Honour Register listing the 1.7 million Commonwealth servicemen and women who died during World Wars I and II and the 23,000 cemeteries and memorials where they are commemorated. CWGC also contains a register of the 67,000 Commonwealth civilians killed during the Second World War.

First World War

All aspects of the war, including significant battles, types of warfare and weaponry, photos, maps and other illustrations, poetry, prose and media reports, memoirs and diaries, and primary contemporary documents.

IWM Collections Online

Imperial War Museum site covering twentieth century conflict, within sections headed War on Land, at Sea and in the Air, War and Peace, Prisoners, Civilians, Commonwealth, Truth and Propaganda and Burial and Remembrance. Resources include articles, photos, art work and sound recordings.

Napoleon Series

800+ pages of articles, features and documents dedicated to Napoleon and the Napoleonic era.

UK Battlefields Resource Centre

A work in progress, with detailed information on over 60 of the most important and best preserved English and Scottish battlefields. Downloadable terrain and action maps of the battles, aerial photos and Ordnance Survey (OS) Explorer map of the relevant area, accounts of the battles and guides to further reading. Also includes a section for teachers on using battlefields as education resources.

Vietnam War

Photographic images of the Vietnam War, in colour and black and white, some poignant some horrific, in five sections headed Machines, Faces, Hippies, Under Fire and Life and Sorrow.

World War I Document Archive

Primary sources, including diaries, memorials and personal reminiscences, books, conventions, treaties and images. The website is put together by volunteers of the WWI Military History List, and is international in focus.

World War I: Trenches on the Web

History of the Great War providing articles, archival material, biographies and other texts, statistical information and timelines, and photographs, maps and other illustrations, and including information about armies, armaments and battles.

World at War: History of WW 1939-1945

Very comprehensive history of the Second World War, including sections covering years preceding the war from Hitler's birth. The site contains information, articles, memoirs, book chapters, features, documents and other texts, photographs, maps and other images, statistics, timelines and links.

World War II Timeline

Thorough history of World War II, including the build up to conflict from 1917. Official documents, articles and features can be accessed either by date or topic, and the site contains many maps, photographs and other illustrations.
