Italy takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.

27 to 28 April

A European Council meeting in Luxembourg discusses problems arising from the United Kingdom's contribution to the European Community budget.

30 May

The European Council reaches a compromise regarding the United Kingdom's contribution to the European Community budget.

1 July

Luxembourg takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.


1981

1 January

The Netherlands take over the Presidency of The Council of the European Communities.
Greece becomes the tenth member of the European Community.

20 January

The new European Commission takes office, with Gaston Thorn, former Luxembourg prime minister, as its President.

1 July

The United Kingdom takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.

18 October

A European Parliamentary election is held in Greece.


1982

1 January

Belgium takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.

19 January

Pieter Dankert, Dutch statesman, is elected President of the European Parliament.

23 February

Greenland, which became a member of the European Community as part of Denmark, in a referendum votes to withdraw from the Community.

1 July

Denmark takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.

3 to 4 December

A European Council meeting in Copenhagen sets out a number of priority objectives in favour of enlargement.

European year for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises and Artisanship

1 January

Germany takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.

21 to 22 March

A European Council meeting in Brussels declares in favour of enlargement.

17 to 19 June

At a European Council meeting in Stuttgart, a Solemn Declaration on the European Union is signed.

1 July

Greece takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.

14 September

The European Deputy Altiero Spinelli, Italian statesman, presents to the European Parliament a draft treaty establishing the European Union.


1984

1 January

France takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.

14 February

Altiero Spinelli's draft treaty on the establishment of the European Union is overwhelmingly passed by the European Parliament.

19 to 20 March

A European Council meeting in Brussels cannot agree on the amount of budgetary rebate to be repaid to the United Kingdom and by how much to reduce the UK's future contributions to the European Community budget.

7 June

The Council and member states' governments adopt a resolution on the reduction of border checks on people.

14 and 17 June

The second elections to the European Parliament are held.

25 to 26 June

A European Council meeting in Fontainebleau agrees the amount of budgetary rebate to be repaid to the United Kingdom and by how much to reduce the UK's future contributions to the European Community budget.

1 July

Ireland takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.

13 July

In Saarbrucken, France and Germany sign an agreement to gradually reduce of border checks.

24 July

Election of Pierre Pflimlin, former French prime minister, as new President of the Parliament.

3 to 4 December

A European Council meeting in Dublin agrees to reinforce the European Monetary System (EMS) and to grant the ECU a more important role.

European Year for Music

1 January

Italy takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.
The first European passports are issued in most of the member states.

7 January

The new Commission takes office with Jacques Delors, French statesman, as its President.

1 February

Greenland leaves the Community.

29 to 30 March

A European Council meeting in Brussels accepts the inclusion of Spain and Portugal in the European Communities.

12 June

Signature of the Accession Treaties of Spain and Portugal.

14 June

Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg and The Netherlands sign the Schengen Agreement (at Schengen in Luxembourg), dismantling border controls.

1 July

Luxembourg takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.

2 to 4 December

A European Council meeting in Luxembourg amends the Treaty of Rome, adding impetus to European integration by preparing the Single European Act.


1986

1 January

The Netherlands take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.
Spain and Portugal join the European Communities.

17 and 28 February

The Single European Act amending the Treaty of Rome is signed in Luxembourg and The Hague.

29 May

The European flag, adopted by Community institutions, is flown for the first time, in front of the Berlaymont building (headquarters of the European Commission in Brussels) as the European anthem is played.

1 July

The United Kingdom takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.


1987

1 January

Belgium takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.

20 January

Lord Henry Plumb, British statesman, is elected new President of the Parliament.

14 April

Turkey formally applies to join the European Communities.

26 May

Following the referendum in Ireland on the ratification of the Single European Act, the Irish constitution is amended to allow Ireland to ratify the Single Act.

10 June

A European Parliamentary election is held in Spain.

1 July

Denmark takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.
The Single European Act enters into force.

19 July

European elections are held in Portugal.

12 September

Member states' finance ministers adopt a number measures to strengthen the European Monetary System (EMS).


1988

Jean Monnet European Year and European Year for Cinema and Television

1 January

Germany takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.

27 to 28 June

A European Council meeting in Hanover appoints a committee to oversee monetary union; and reappoints Jacques Delors as President of the Commission.

1 July

Greece takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.


1989

1 January

Spain takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.

12 April

The Delors Committee reports on economic and monetary union.

15 to 18 June

Direct elections to the European Parliament are held for the third time.

19 June

The Spanish peseta joins the European Monetary System (EMS) exchange-rate mechanism.
The composition of the ECU is adjusted following the inclusion of the Spanish peseta and the Portuguese escudo.

26 to 27 June

A European Council meeting in Madrid reaches conclusions regarding economic and monetary union, stresses the importance of balance between the social and economic aspects of a single market, and gives the environment high priority.

1 July

France takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.

17 July

Austria formally applies to join the European Community.

9 November

The Berlin Wall collapses.
