In a second vote in Denmark, a referendum result is in favour of the Treaty on European Union.

A European Council meeting in Copenhagen confirms that the accession of Austria, Finland, Sweden and Norway can take place in 1995, and that associated countries of Central and Eastern Europe can become full members when they satisfy certain political and economic conditions.

The Commission accepts the convergence report and recommends that eleven member states adopt the euro on 1 January 1999.
30 March
A ministerial meeting begins the accession process for the ten Central and Eastern European applicant countries and Cyprus.
3 May
A special Council meeting decides that eleven member states meet criteria enabling them to adopt the single currency on 1 January 1999. Following on from this decision, the Commission and the European Monetary Institute lay down conditions for determining of the irrevocable conversion rates for the euro.
