European Health Insurance
United Kingdom citizens are entitled to reduced-cost or free medical treatment whilst in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland.
The EEA is made up of full members of the European Union (EU), together with Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and Switzerland through special arrangements with the EU.
To qualify for health insurance, UK citizens will need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The EHIC replaced the E111 document, which is no-longer valid, on 1 January 2006.
