2007 DML Devon Youth Games

Plymouth athletes returned to the city with a clutch of medals - two gold, two silver and four bronze, to finish as overall winners.

At the popular sporting event, held in Okehampton, more than 1,200 talented youngsters aged between 9 and 15 years old represented Devon's eight local authorities.

The Olympic-style event featured eleven separate sports - aquathlon, athletics, badminton, girls cricket, gymnastics, hockey, netball, street sports, tag rugby, tennis and volleyball.

Plymouth City Council's Sports Development Unit took 15 teams to the tournament, which was opened by Mark Tyler from Westcountry TV and concluded with Brooke Gradden, Commonwealth diver at the closing ceremony.

The games aim to:

  • celebrate youth sport
  • provide meaningful activities for young people
  • provide a focus and tangible outcome for sports development work
  • create a spirit of friendly co-operation between authorities
  • demonstrate and promote the value of sports development
  • provide a new level of competition for young people with sporting potential, under county level
  • encourage the development of links between schools, clubs, governing bodies of sport, leisure departments and the voluntary sports clubs to obtain maximum opportunity for the development of sport for young people
