The countryside
Dartmoor
Only a few miles from the city is Dartmoor National Park, one of the finest and largest National Parks in Britain and the last great wilderness in southern England. The landscape is unique with its high heather covered moors, ancient standing stones, hut circles and stone clapper bridges. You can walk, cycle or ride on horseback to enjoy this extraordinary area at its best.
Fine scenery
The countryside around Plymouth provides some of the finest scenery in the West Country. As well as Dartmoor and the mellow farmland of Devon and Cornwall, the Tamar Valley - with its superb river creeks and estuaries - is not only an important haven for wildlife, but is also a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
A taste of tradition
Enjoy a traditional pub lunch at one of the many country inns, or try a clotted cream tea in a quaint tea shop. It’s an authentic taste of the West Country.
All aboard
For lovers of trains, the Plymouth area is a very popular destination - and with good reason. There are a number of small local railways to choose from, all offering the chance to experience beautiful countryside in comfort.
