A Fish Sale... Explored
Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Drake Circus
Throughout the month
A new exploration of the iconic Newlyn School painting, 'A Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach', by Stanhope Forbes – one of the most admired paintings in the Museum’s collections.
The exhibition will use photographs, natural history specimens and other archival material to bring the historic context surrounding the painting to life.
Admission to the exhibition is free. Opening hours are 10am to 5.30pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 5pm on Saturdays and Bank Holiday Mondays.

Geometry of Fear
Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Drake Circus
Until 14 October
Works from the post-war period by important British sculptors including Kenneth Armitage, Reg Butler, Henry Moore, Eduardo Paolozzi and William Turnbull. This is a Hayward Touring exhibition from Southbank Centre, London on behalf of Arts Council England.
Admission to the exhibition is free. Opening hours are 10am to 5.30pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 5pm on Saturdays and Bank Holiday Mondays.
Continental market
16 to 19 October
Sundial and New George Street
Some of the finest in European food, drink and craftwork will be on offer when Plymouth City Centre welcomes back the hugely popular continental market.
Traders from France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Holland, Poland, Hungary and Greece will provide a real taste of Europe at the event being held from Thursday 5 April to Saturday 7 April in the Armada Way piazza.
Already the largest event of its kind in the south west, the continental market promises to be even bigger and better this year with some exciting new traders due to be selling their wares alongside returning old favourites.
Fungi Hunt
Cornish Mining World Heritage Site
Saturday 18 October, 10.30am to 1pm
Join Wild About Plymouth to explore Morwellham’s fungi with Paul Lunt, from the University of Plymouth’s School of Earth, Ocean and Environmental Science. Come along and find out more about this strange and fascinating group, which is more closely related to animals than plants!
Admission is £3 per adult/£2 per child/Under 5s go free. Places are limited and must be booked in advance by completing and returning a booking form by Friday 10 October. Booking forms will be included in the forthcoming Wild About Plymouth leaflet, which will be available from July 2008 onwards.
Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery 16th International Concert Series
Ivan Ilic – piano
Thursday 23 October, 1pm
A rising star on the Parisian music scene, 28-year-old American pianist Ivan Ilyicis fast-gaining international recognition for his "unique blend of a Gallic touch, a Slavic soul and a mathematician’s precision."

Respect Festival
Sunday 25 to 26 October 2008
Plymouth Guildhall 11am to 4.30pm
Plymouth Racial Equality Council (REC) holds this annual family fun day to celebrate the cultural diversity of the city. The Respect Festival is a fantastic and vibrant multicultural day. It offers live music; dance acts, plus stalls offering people the chance to buy clothes, jewellery, books and toys from a variety of cultures across the world.
Try one of the workshops such as; hair braiding, henna tattooing and drumming. The outside stage features a variety of singers, rappers and break-dancers. A fashion show covering a rich array of cultural clothes will be displayed on the main stage, plus lots more.
