An exciting calendar of local, national and international events has been unveiled as Plymouth launches its second Summer Festival.

A Fish Sale... Explored
Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Drake Circus
Throughout the month
A new exploration of the iconic Newlyn School painting, 'A Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach', by Stanhope Forbes – one of the most admired paintings in the Museum’s collections.
The exhibition will use photographs, natural history specimens and other archival material to bring the historic context surrounding the painting to life.
Admission to the exhibition is free. Opening hours are 10am to 5.30pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 5pm on Saturdays and Bank Holiday Mondays.

Introduction to Plein-Air Sketching
Thursday 11 September, 10.30am to 3pm
Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Drake Circus/The Hoe
Learn how to sketch the way the Newlyn artists did with this free adult workshop led by artists Charlotte Gunn and Adam Milford.
Meet at the Museum at 10.30am to look around the A Fish Sale… Explored exhibition. Then make your way to The Hoe for some sketching in the open air.
No previous experience is necessary and basic materials will be supplied.
Please bring along your own sketchbooks and materials if you have them, plus a packed lunch.
Advance booking is essential due to limited places. Please call 01752 304774 to reserve your place.

Geometry of Fear
Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Drake Circus
13 September to 14 October
Works from the post-war period by important British sculptors including Kenneth Armitage, Reg Butler, Henry Moore, Eduardo Paolozzi and WilliamTurnbull. This is a Hayward Touring exhibition from Southbank Centre, London on behalf of Arts Council England.
Admission to the exhibition is free. Opening hours are 10am to 5.30pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 5pm on Saturdays and Bank Holiday Mondays.
Hidden in the Rocks
Ford Park Cemetery, Ford Park Road
Sunday 14 September, 11am to 1pm
Join Wild About Plymouth to investigate the rocks that make the gravestones and discover the men from a time when geology was a new science.
Admission is free and there is no need to book in advance. Meet us at the chapel at Ford Park Cemetery. If you’ve got one, bring a magnifying glass with you. Recommended bus route is Plymouth City Bus 31.
Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery 16th International Concert Series
Sulki Yu - violin
Alexander Karpeyev - piano
Thursday 25 September, 1pm
Sulki Yu, the highly acclaimed South Korean virtuoso will be accompanied by the Russian prodigy Alexander Karpeyev. Their programme will include works by Schubert, Debussy, Ysaye and Ravel.
