Council opposes Civic Centre listing
Plymouth’s 1960s Civic Centre has been given grade 2 listed building status by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
The listing was opposed by the City Council both as the landowner and as the local planning authority and it is now planning to formally challenge the listed status.
The listing on the recommendation of English Heritage has not only dealt a blow to exciting plans to develop this key city centre site but has left the City Council with a potential bill of up to £40 million to refurbish the crumbling tower block.
The Council recently announced that it was working with ROK on plans to redevelop the site for a variety of uses that would bring this part of the City Centre to life.
The listing will also place a huge financial burden on the City Council and will affect its ability to deliver services in the city. The Council could now have to divert resources from delivering services for the people of Plymouth to maintaining a building that no longer meets the needs of a modern local council.
The City Council is now urgently seeking ways of getting the listing overturned.
