Severe weather warnings
You can monitor severe weather warnings on the South West England weather forecast page on the Met Office website or scroll to the bottom of this page for the weather widget.
Winter travel
Our winter road maintenance teams are on call 24 hours a day from the beginning of October to the end of March each year.
The Met Office helps us to monitor changes in the weather and ensure that we take action where necessary to minimise any danger to the travelling public.
This includes:
- Carrying out precautionary salting when there is a risk of ice or snow
- Monitoring road conditions and directing resources to areas where there are problems
- Clearing major routes of snow
- Providing roadside salt bins
- Responding to flooding incidents and fallen trees
- Keeping traffic moving
For advice on preparing your car for Winter and driving safely in severe conditions see our Winter travel advice page.
The Highways Agency also has some useful tips on driving in Winter – see our Get ready for Winter page for further information.
For information on our salting routes and salt bin locations, as well as advice on clearing ice and snow, see our Winter maintenance pages.
Contact details for local bus companies are available on our bus timetables page.
Keeping warm and safe
There are lots of practical steps you can take to protect your home, your family and yourself against the Winter weather - from getting the flu jab and signing up for flood warnings to insulating water tanks and pipes.
The Directgov website has useful guidance on keeping warm, healthy and safe through the cold weather, as well as ways to save money.
For more information visit the Directgov 'Get ready for Winter' page.
