A carer and an elderly woman

Putting carers first in Plymouth

Carers are people who look after a relative, neighbour or friend of any age who has a long term illness, disability or is older and frail.

This section of the website talks about carers and how Plymouth City Council can support you as a carer.

We have a duty to support those who provide regular and substantial care to others, whether they are family members, friends or neighbours. There are a number of ways in which we can do this, and we want to find the way that is best for you.

It is our duty to:

  • Provide information to carers about their right to support and the ways that the support may be provided
  • Inform all carers that they have a right to an assessment and that this can be carried out either with the person that they care for, or separately
  • Create a care plan that looks at the carer's willingness to continue caring and their ability to do so
  • Involve the carer in monitoring and reviewing the care plan

These pages give carers important information about adult social care and other organisations that are there to offer support.

As well as the services that are available to carers through adult social care, we have contracts with community and voluntary sector organisations to set up and develop carers' support. Colebrook Housing oversee our carers service.

All carers who are registered with Plymouth City Council automatically receive a copy of a carers newsletter produced by Carers Champions, but if you are not registered but would like to receive updated information, please contact Plymouth City Council's carer services on 01752 305587 and we will make sure that we send you a copy.

St John Ambulance Devon in collaboration with Carers Champions are offering the opportunity for carers to attend a free four-session course aimed at providing practical skills and information. For more information call St John Ambulance Devon 01392 822646.
