What is self-advocacy?
-

Self-advocacy means:
Speaking up for yourself
Getting your voice heard, by yourself or with help
Saying what you like and what you do not like
Saying what you want to change about your life -

Standing up for your rights.
Rights are things that mean you should be treated fairly.
Having rights means being the boss of your life.
-

Making choices.
You need to understand what the choices are so you can make the right choice for yourself.
Other people should not be able to tell you what to do with your life.
-

Being independent.
Doing things for yourself as much as you can, without other people always doing things for you.
You can still be independent and have help when you need it.
-

Taking responsibility for yourself.
Looking after yourself.
Using your common sense.
-

Getting things done for yourself.
Not always waiting for other people to get things done for you, because that is not having your own responsibilities.
