    Disablist incidents

    This is something bad done to you because you are a disabled (or thought to be disabled) by another person.

    It is an offence (crime) brought about by unfriendly or aggressive behaviour towards a victim’s disability.

    Behaviours identified and talked about by people with learning disabilities include - kicking, biting, name-calling, teasing, stealing, pushing, threatening, having things thrown at you, hitting, being shouted at, demanding money, spitting, hair pulling, being punched or beaten up.

    When someone makes you upset, frightened, calls you names, attacks you, makes fun of you, winds you up, or phones you all the time when you don’t want it.

  • Court

    The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) have written an easy read booklet about how they deal with disability hate crime. The CPS work with the police and the courts to make sure they have all the facts and evidence to prosecute someone for a disablist crime.

    The report also explains the help and support the CPS can offer to victims of disablist hate crime.

  • Increased prison sentence for disability hate crime murders.

    The government will now make sure that the prison sentence for disability-related murders will be the same as other hate crime murders.

    The prison sentence for disability related murder is 15 years, this could increase to 30 years in line with murders linked to a persons race, religion or sexuality.
