Day services

What is a community day centre?

Plymouth City Council have a number of contracted weekly places at day centres in association with Age Concern. We pay for a number of places each week, with clients attending alongside Age Concern private “guests”.

The day centres work on the basis that there are older members of each community who, for various reasons, now find themselves less able to get out unaccompanied but still have the desire to enjoy a day out, share a cooked lunch and join in the activities of the centres which provide the opportunity to spend quality time with others.

Day centres make an important contribution to community awareness by acting as a preventative measure for problems caused by lack of social contact and stimuli. Our day centres allow older people to continue to lead an independent life by allowing members choice, control, independence and dignity through various activities and events provided. Members have many opportunities to contribute to the life of the day centre, through activities that encourage self-esteem and self-fulfilment.

Is there a charge?

Day centres are self-financing, therefore a fee is payable. This charge varies according to the centre's running costs (taking into account catering, transport, rent of premises, outings etc.).

Client’s attending via a Plymouth City Council contract will be required to undertake a financial assessment to ascertain their eligibility to contribute towards the cost.

A majority of Plymouth City Council funded clients are fully subsidised and are only required to pay for their lunch, which is mandatory for all guests.

How is the scheme accessed?

All day centres function on a city-wide basis with local older people as members; this encourages a neighbourly feel to the scheme and prevents lengthy journeys.

Requests for day centre places are taken from a variety of sources, including Social Care and Health departments, the Health Authority, GPs, family, friends and individual people themselves. Referrals are accepted via our Contact Centre.

Waiting lists are not necessarily handled on a 'first come first served' basis, but on assessed need and availability of a suitable place.

Once referred to us, action will be taken to contact the prospective member as soon as possible.

You will be offered an assessment of need by a Plymouth City Council care manager such as a social worker or occupational therapist. This may be via the telephone or a visit to the persons or carer's home.

After an assessment of need and eligibility is confirmed, you will be offered a day care place if this service meets the assessed need, and be placed on our day care waiting list.

As soon as a suitable place becomes available, the day care co-ordinator will contact Age Concern who will send a representative to your home to agree the transport/social arrangements and start date etc.

Persons not meeting the eligibility criteria will be encouraged to contact Age Concern directly, as they offer an independent service alongside Plymouth City Council and may offer a service to people not eligible for Council funding.

If you would like to be considered for a day centre service yourself or know of someone who would benefit, please use the contact details provided.

Who runs the day centres?

Each centre is organised by a team of employees and volunteers who act in the capacity of 'good neighbours'. These people who are also part of the local community, are responsible for the day to day running of each centre. Age Concern Plymouth provides continued support and training for all volunteers.

Volunteers with a wide range of skills help to provide a varied and friendly environment.

Making more of life

Our aim is simple - to help you make the most of life.

The things we do ensure that you have the opportunity to live your life to the full. We do that in ways that may surprise you.

We believe that age should be valued. We believe that there should be just as much choice available to those who are older, as to those who are younger. We believe in your right to stay independent for as long as possible.

Our volunteers give practical support and we have expert information you can rely on and give you peace of mind in many other ways. By responding to your needs we enable you to do things your way. Above all, we strive to make daily life better both now and in the future.
