Supporting people
The supporting people programme is committed to providing a better quality of life for vulnerable people to live more independently and maintain their tenancies. The programme provides housing related support to help people to develop and sustain their ability to live independently in their accommodation, helping to prevent problems that can often lead to hospitalisation, institutional care or homelessness. It can help the smooth transition to independent living for those leaving a supported or institutionalised environment.
The funding pays for support but not equipment or care. The support helps people to do things for themselves.
Here are some examples of what the Council funds through Supporting People:
- help to enable older people to remain in their own home as long as they wish to by funding visiting support services
- help for young people to prepare for greater independence through training in basic skills such as cooking and budgeting
- help for people leaving institutions, such as prison, or who have been homeless set up home
- provision of on-going support for people adjusting to more independent living, if moving into their own home after living in a special housing and support scheme, for example someone who has a learning disability leaving residential care and moving to their own home.
Supporting People funded services are included in the Plymouth online Directory
