Telephones
While you are looked after by Plymouth City Council, it is important that you keep in touch with your family and friends. As well as meeting and writing to them, you should also be able to talk to them on the telephone. There should be a telephone you can use in your foster home or Children’s Home.
Your foster carer should let you use the telephone at reasonable times to either receive phone calls from people you know, or to phone them yourself. However, as in any family home, telephone calls cost money and you should not spend ‘hours’ on the phone chatting to your friends and running up large telephone bills. You should talk to your foster carer about using the phone.
There will be times when you will want to talk privately to your family and friends and you should be able to do this. Again, you should talk to your carer about talking on the phone in private.
Sometimes, your carer might have concerns about who you are talking to on the phone or what you might be talking about. If this happens they should talk to you about it and if necessary, ask your social worker to help talk to you if these are concerns about your wellbeing or safety.
If you feel you are not being allowed reasonable telephone contact with your family or friends, and you cannot sort it out with your carer, you should talk to your social worker. If you are still unhappy you should contact our Complaints Officer.
