Public Health Development Unit
The Public Health Development Unit (PHDU), led by the Director of Public Health for Plymouth, works to improve and protect the health and well-being of the population of Plymouth. Our key aim is to reduce the significant inequalities in health and well-being that exist between neighbourhoods and communities across the city. We do this by:
- supporting organisations whose work affects health and well being, to plan and develop services that are better suited to the needs of those communities and neighbourhoods who experience the worst health and well-being.
- working to strengthen communities so that more people are able to make positive life choices that will improve their overall health and well-being.
- sharing skills, networks, information and learning so that those working to tackle inequalities in health and well being have the tools they need to do their jobs.
The Public Health Development Unit has staff working across the following teams and partner organisations:
- Plymouth Smoking Advice Service
- Plymouth Health Promotion Resources
- Plymouth Social Inclusion Partnership
- Department of Sociology, University of Plymouth
- Child Protection
- Plymouth Drug and Alcohol Action Team
- Health Protection Agency.
The key means by which the PHDU will deliver its aims is through 'Our City's Health', a city-wide framework launched on 27 May 2004.
'Our City's Health' is a city-wide framework which promotes improvements in the health and well-being of the people in Plymouth. 'Our City's Health' aims to:
- reduce health inequalities across Plymouth
- inform, influence and challenge partners to improve health and well-being in Plymouth
- encourage all partners to consider the determinants of health when developing their own plans and work programmes
- help to deliver Plymouth's City Strategy.
'Our City's Health' has five key themes:
- tackling the determinants of health
- strengthening the health of disadvantaged communities
- promoting the health of children and young people
- promoting the health of older people
- preventing ill-health from major illnesses.
