Laptop replacement

All laptops whose warranties have expired will be replaced as part of the corporate replacement programme.

As existing laptops are identified as due for replacement they will be replaced with laptops that can be encrypted so the security risks that arise when they are taken off site are minimised.

What gets replaced?

Any existing docking station will be automatically replaced for the new laptop. However, if a monitor, keyboard or mouse are currently used with the laptop the following options are available:

  • Purchase a stand that lifts the laptop to an appropriate height (as per display screen equipment requirements)
  • Or, if the majority of work is carried out at the desk, ISD can replace the laptop with a desktop pc.

The stand will be charged to the department at £30, but the desktop replacement is free of charge.

If a CD/DVD reader/writer is installed on the current laptop, in order to have this functionality replaced, a business justification must be submitted to the PC replacement team via email. A response to the request will be notified within 10 working days.

The new laptops have an upgraded operating system and software. Any user who requires help with Windows XP or Office 2003 can go to the IT Help and Support pages for guidance. In addition, the ICT training team are offering familiarisation courses; please email the PC replacement team if you wish to attend.

What do I need to do now?

All users whose laptops have been identified as needing to be replaced will be contacted.

It is the responsibility of the laptop user to ensure that all confidential data is removed from the laptop before it is handed in to ISD.

The existing laptop, its bag, power supply, any cables, mouse etc are to be taken to the ISD offices on Floor 2 of the Civic Centre between 8am and 12 noon Monday to Thursday.

Collection of the new laptop will be the following day from 12 noon onwards from the same location.

There will be no drop off or collections made on a Friday.

If there is any other ICT equipment that needs to be disposed of (eg screen, keyboard etc) please contact the PC replacement team to arrange a convenient day and time for collection.

If there are any queries regarding the replacement of laptops please contact the PC replacement team.
