Desktop shortcuts

To quickly access files or folders you may have created shortcuts to them on the desktop of your machine; these do not transfer to your new machine. There are separate instructions depending on whether you are the only user of the PC or you share it with someone else.

If nobody else uses your machine

Before the move

  • Right click on the start button and choose explore
  • Click on the desktop folder (this is the first item on the list)
  • Select and copy each of the shortcuts that you have created (a quick way of doing this will be to hold down CTRL whilst you select each file, then right click over one of them and choose copy)
  • Paste in to your F: drive folder

After the move

  • Right click on the start button and choose explore
  • Expand your F: drive folders
  • Select the required shortcuts and copy
  • Paste them back into the desktop folder

If other people use your machine

Before the move

  • Right click on the start button and choose explore
  • Find the documents and settings folder on the C: drive
  • Locate and expand the folder with your userID (this should be the username you log into the machine with)
  • Select and copy the desktop folder (you can right click on this and choose copy)
  • Paste into your F: drive folder (again you can right click on your F: drive folder and then choose paste)

After the move

  • Right click on the start button and choose explore
  • Locate your saved desktop folder on the F: drive
  • Copy this folder
  • Find the documents and settings folder on the C: drive
  • Locate and expand the folder with your userID
  • Paste your copy of the desktop folder - you may be asked if you want to replace the existing folder, say yes
