Winter service
The winter service season lasts from the beginning of October to the end of March each year. During this period, winter teams are on call 24 hours a day.
We keep a close eye on the weather through our own forecast station and two sensor stations. We have salt stores of more than 1000 tonnes so that if road temperatures drop significantly we are prepared, with seven gritters ready for action.
Because it is not possible to salt all the roads in Plymouth, we concentrate on the main routes used for getting into, out of and around the city to keep it moving even during extreme weather.
Devon's motorways and trunk roads are maintained by the Highways Agency.
For more information download our winter service fact sheet below.
