Accessibility action plans
The transport strategy team has been working with other organisations in Plymouth to tackle accessibility issues for people living in Plymouth. With the help of these partners we have produced accessibility action plans for:
- Barne Barton
- Derriford Hospital
- Young people
We are also working on accessibility action plans for:
- Access to leisure
- Devonport
Once the majority of the actions have been progressed in a particular action plan, then the plan is updated to reflect a new set of problems and opportunities with resulting actions.
As a direct result of the young persons accessibility action plan, a partnership between the Transport and Highways Department, Integrated Youth Services and Connexions led to the development of a bike based 'wheels to opportunities' scheme. The scheme is aimed at individuals that have difficulty accessing work, training or educational activities. They are loaned a bike and given a day of cycle training (BikeLinks). Due to the popularity of the scheme organisations including Connexions, Looked After Children's Services, A4E and Shekinah Mission now refer clients to the scheme, which is the only wholly bike based scheme in the country. One satisfied customer said:
"The bike has changed a lot of things for me. I can get about Plymouth and I definitely have no excuses for not being able to get anywhere - the course wasn't too challenging and I learned a lot."
Barne Barton accessibility action plan
Barne Barton was highlighted by the Council as a priority area for action as a result of local accessibility assessments carried out on the nine less affluent neighbourhoods within Plymouth.
The Barne Barton accessibility action plan sets out how improved access to services and opportunities in Barne Barton has been identified as important to us. It contains accessibility problems raised by Plymouth City Council, the Barne Barton Partnership and other consultees. The problems are listed followed by a set of time-bound actions to help tackle the problems. The action plan can be download from the documents table below.
Derriford Hospital accessibility action plan II
Access to health care and specifically access to Derriford Hospital has been identified as a priority area for the Council. Accessibility problems, identified in partnership between Plymouth City Council and Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust are listed followed by a set of time-bound actions to help resolve these problems. This document is the second Derriford Hospital accessibility action plan and was adopted by the Local Strategic Partnership's Healthy Theme Group in February 2010. The action plan can be download from the documents table below.
Young People's accessibility action plan
This action plan was put together as a result of work between Plymouth City Council and Connexions and is also supported by Integrated Youth Services. It identifies accessibility problems faced by young people in Plymouth, and a set of actions to help resolve those problems. The action plan can be download from the documents table below.
Access to leisure
It is planned that this accessibility action plan will be completed by the end of 2011.
Devonport
This accessibility action plan is being developed in partnership with the Devonport Regeneration Community Partnership (DRCP) and is currently in draft form. It is intended that Section 106 funding will be used to fund an 'Accessibility Study' to strengthen this document before publication in the summer of 2010.
