Car sharing

What is car sharing?

Car sharing is when two or more people team up to share a car journey, often on a regular basis for work or for leisure journeys. This can help provide the benefits of car travel but cut costs and congestion.

Carsharedevon.com is a free service for Devon residents that links drivers and passengers so they can share car journeys - and it could save you money. The service is provided in partnership by Plymouth City Council, Devon County Council and Torbay Borough Council.

The car sharing database is provided by Liftshare, the largest car share network in the UK. Liftshare is a social enterprise which helps people to travel more sustainably by sharing their journey, cutting their carbon footprint and saving money.

Car sharing is flexible

You choose:

  • the time of day
  • the destination
  • male or female
  • smoker or non smoker
  • regular or occasional trips

All you have to do is:

  1. Log onto carsharedevon.com.
  2. Register your details and enter a journey.
  3. You will receive an activation email, click the link on the email and the system will search for your potential travel companions.

How can car sharing work for you?

If you have travel or parking issues to resolve, then car sharing might be the solution. If you are an employer then encouraging employees to car share may be a useful feature of your company's Travel Plan.
