Road works
We co-ordinate all planned road works and emergency road works, such as burst or broken pipes, which have to be repaired straight away. We try to ensure that any disruption is kept to a minimum by controlling the times of day, week and year that work can be done on different streets.
Organisations that carry out the installation and repair of underground pipes or cables have to submit plans to us so that their works can be planned together. We try to ensure that all works in the same road are carried out together, and that different schemes are timed so that they do not interfere with one another.
We carry out a variety of works ourselves to maintain a safe highway network. Roads have to be re-surfaced, drains need to be cleared, structures such as bridges need to be inspected and repaired, even installing signs or lines on the road can effect traffic flow and cause disruption. Our own schemes have to be included in the planning process along with everyone else.
When major schemes are required we plan contingency measures as far as possible. Suitable diversion routes have to be planned and signed. We try to inform people, both local residents and road users, about what is happening so alternative arrangements can be made.
