Equality impact assessments
Plymouth City Council is committed to valuing, promoting and celebrating equality, diversity and community cohesion in order to ensure that our residents, employees and visitors enjoy an outstanding quality of life. We are committed to ensuring that people in our multi-cultural city have equal access to high quality services and the right to live, learn and work, free from unlawful discrimination. Our commitment to equalities applies to everything we do in the Council and with our citizens. It is at the core of our work with partners to make Plymouth a vibrant waterfront city of the world.
Equality impact assessments are designed to assess and proof the impact local government policies have on communities. Equality proofing policies helps to reduce negative impacts and increase positive impacts for disadvantaged people within communities that use local government services. Equality impact assessments also help to provide and generate suggestions for improvements to the delivery of local government services.
The Equality Standard for Local government (ESLG) requires local authorities to carry out equality impact assessments with regard to race, gender and disability, and ensures that legislative requirements are met. The city centre car parks and Barbican conservation area equality impact assessments have included the six equality strands of:
- age
- faith and belief
- disability
- gender
- race
- sexual orientation
Further information relating to equality impact assessments can be found via the web site links on the right. The city centre and Barbican conservation area equality impact assessment can be found below.
