National concessionary bus pass

Old-style concessionary bus passes

Tuesday 30 September 2008 is the last day on which the old-style concessionary bus passes (orange or pink) will be valid for travelling on our local buses. If you have not yet applied for your new national concessionary bus pass, you need to do as soon as possible. Only the new national passes will be accepted from 1 October 2008.

Applying for the new national concessionary pass couldn't be easier. Call in at the Civic Centre with your proof of age or disability, along with proof of residence in Plymouth and we will do the rest. The new passes will be produced and sent to your home address within seven to ten days - they are no longer available over the counter. Please register at the Civic Centre to ensure you continue to enjoy free bus travel anywhere in England after 30 September.

We are open Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm.

Latest news

From 1 April 2008 around 11 million people across England have the opportunity to travel wherever they want to for free on local buses as the new bus pass comes into effect. In Plymouth we are in the process of issuing 46,000 bus passes to our residents. If you have a query regarding your application please visit our help page which provides some answers to frequently reported issues.

The scheme

From 1 April 2008 the Plymouth entitlement for free local bus travel was extended to allow free local bus travel in every area of England. This means that whether using the bus locally, or when visiting other parts of England, concessionary pass holders are able to travel for free.

Your pass will still be subject to time restrictions, which may vary slightly across England and will not be valid on long distance coaches such as National Express.

  • 60 years and over and eligible disabled residents - free bus travel for over 60s and disabled residents from 9.30am to 11pm Monday to Friday, and any time at weekends and bank holidays. Pass holders travelling before 9.30am Monday to Friday will be charged the commercial fares set by the bus operator, as there will be no concession before this time.
  • 80 years and over and registered blind residents - free bus travel in Plymouth for over 80s and registered blind residents all day until 11pm Monday to Friday and any time at weekends and bank holidays. We are offering this in addition to the statutory minimum. Please note: outside of Plymouth your pass will not be valid until 9.30am Monday to Friday.

In addition to the above, free travel on ring and ride services run by Plymouth shopmobility and community transport will also be provided for eligible residents. We are offering this in addition to the statutory minimum. For further information and to find out if you are eligible please ring 01752 600633 or visit the Plymouth shopmobility and community transport website.
