Street lighting
The city has approximately 35,000 lighting units;
- 28,000 highway lights
- 5,400 various illuminated signs
- the remainder are owned by parks or housing
All of these units are maintained annually under a term maintenance contract of four years (2006 to 2010 with the option of extending to seven years), with Southern Electrical Contracting, part of the Scottish and Southern Energy Group.
In line with national figures we aim to repair faults within five calendar days, with minor renewals completed within 10 calendar days.
The annual budget for highway lighting is approximately £2.7m including energy. The section currently consists of four members of staff headed by the Lighting Controller.
Faults can be reported direct to Southern Electrical Contracting on 01752 755570 or to us on 01752 304911 (both have answer phones if engineers are busy).
If you are reporting a fault, we will need the number of the unit (which can be found on the column or the sign mounted approximately 2m from the ground on a white square background), together with the street name. If the unit is directly outside a house giving this information will help the engineers find the light.
