On 17 November 2011 the Licensing Committee (Hackney Carriage) resolved to introduce a new tariff (table of fares) effective from 1 December 2011. The new tariff can be viewed below

Hackney carriage vehicles (taxis), private hire vehicles, their drivers and operators are licensed by the Council. Vehicles are subject to an age limit and mechanical tests. Drivers must undergo periodic criminal record checks, DVLA and medical checks.

Commonly asked questions

How do I make a complaint about a hackney carriage (taxi) or private hire driver?

Complaints must be in writing. Write to the licensing office setting out the cause of your complaint, including the date and time of the incident and the plate number. The plate number must be on display inside hackney carriages, on private hire front doors and on the back of both vehicles.

How can I become a hackney carriage or private hire driver?

You will need to complete our application form, undergo a medical examination, criminal record check, driving test and a knowledge test.

Where do I get an MOT test for my hackney carriage taxi?

We have approved and appointed a list of MOT testing stations for the purposes of testing Hackney Carriages and Private Hire vehicles in the city. One of these establishments must be used, the list can be downloaded below:
