Taxi and private hire licence
Hackney carriage vehicles (taxis), private hire vehicles, their drivers and operators are licensed by the Council. Vehicles are subject to an age limit and mechanical tests. Drivers undergo periodic criminal record checks, DVLA and medical checks.
Fares
The council sets the fares for hackney carriages. A fare card giving details of the charges will be displayed inside each vehicle and a taximeter will automatically calculate the fare.
Some private hire vehicles will also run on a meter, but these fares are not set by the Council. Prior to undertaking a journey, the passenger may agree a set fare with the operator.
How can I become a hackney carriage or private hire driver?
You will need to complete our application form, undergo a medical examination, criminal record check, driving test and a knowledge test.

How do I make a complaint about a hackney carriage (taxi) or private hire driver?
Complaints must be in writing. Write to the licensing office setting out the cause of your complaint, including the date and time of the incident and the plate number. The plate number must be on display inside hackney carriages, on private hire front doors and on the back of both vehicles.
