Road Safety Strategy
This Plan will build on the excellent progress to date, and seek to further reduce casualties in the City. The Department for Transport (DfT) 2010 targets seeking reductions of 40% for KSI, 50% child KSI and 10% of slight injury casualties (based on the average of the casualties from 1994 / 98) have already been achieved for all categories.
The City Council has set new targets in this document, to be achieved for 2010, seeking to further improve the safety for all road users in the City but particularly for those that chose sustainable travel modes of cycling and walking. Motorcycling will also be the subject of increased investigation and attention, as this group of road users is now the largest representative group of those involved in KSI collisions.
The need to improve facilities for vulnerable road users is also in keeping with the Governments objectives to promote modal shift to sustainable transport and offer a wider choice of alternatives to use of the car, especially for short trips.
