The Plymouth eastern gateway framework study
In 2003 Plymouth City Council commissioned consultants to carry out a framework study for the eastern gateway to Plymouth.
It aimed to illustrate how the area between Marsh Mills and Heles Terrace/Laira bridge, to the east of the city centre abutting the River Plym, could be developed and improved by identifying and evaluating integrated solutions to transport, development and environmental issues in the short, medium and long-term.
It primarily focused on the physical infrastructure measures that could be implemented in the eastern part of the city. A final report was submitted to officers in March 2004.
The proposals explored in the Eastern Gateway Study were not pursued further by the Council as policy but the information has helped to inform the subsequent Eastern Corridor Study. The Eastern Corridor has a number of key developments proposed for completion by 2016, these include the Sherford New Community, Plymstock Quarry and regeneration to the west of the Laira Bridge. The study considers a range of public transport options which could serve the corridor to ease the impact of any predicted increase in the level of car trips being made to and from the new developments.
