Pedestrian strategy 2001 to 2006

Walking has in recent years been severely undervalued as a means of transport. As a consequence provision for the pedestrian has assumed a low profile. Instead we have relied heavily on the private car and channelled resources into new and better facilities for road traffic.

Lately however there has been a change in strategic thinking. The growth in road vehicles cannot be sustained. Alternative transport modes like walking and cycling offer health, social and environmental benefits and have the potential to play an important role in an integrated transport system. It is in order to exploit the potential for walking in Plymouth that the Plymouth pedestrian strategy has been produced.
