Plymouths around the world

From the beginning of the seventeenth century, seafarers and travellers from Plymouth in England carried the name of Plymouth, and also the names of Plympton and Devonport, now communities within the city, and even Eddystone, after the lighthouse, around the globe.

Today, many communities in the USA are Plymouths, the first in Massachusetts from where migrants subsequently carried the name across the country. There are others in Australia, Canada, the Caribbean and New Zealand, where New Plymouth was founded by migrants who had actually lived in Plymouth, England.
