We need your help
Michael Foot is remembered as a towering figure in British politics. Born in Plymouth in 1913, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Plymouth Devonport in 1945 and later as the MP for Ebbw Vale in 1960 until 1992. After a distinguished Parliamentary career, he became Leader of the Labour Party in 1980. Michael is remembered in Plymouth not only as one of its city's most popular MPs, a trade unionist and a successful journalist but also as a loyal and high-profile supporter of Plymouth Argyle. Right up until his death in 2010 Michael remained an ardent supporter of the City of Plymouth, its football team and its people.
Plymouth City Council has launched a subscription fund to raise money for a memorial to Michael Foot. The memorial is to be placed in Freedom Fields Park in Plymouth, opposite the house in which Michael Foot was born a century ago. Freedom Fields Park was the site of a famous victory over the French in 1403 and is the location where Plymouth's support for the Parliamentarians in the English Civil War is remembered. It was also the scene of many public speeches given by Michael and other members of the Foot family in Plymouth.
It's been some time since our last update but there's been a tremendous amount of progress made! As a result of this we are now quietly confident that we can get the Memorial launched in early December.
Here's where we are.
First, funding. We have encountered positives and negatives on this front. The good news is that many people have been extremely generous. Including the value of non-monetary donations, we have now raised just over £30,000.
Unfortunately however, the sale of the one-off print of Robert Lenkiewicz's portrait of Michael Foot – the original of which hangs at Portcullis House, Westminster - fell through unexpectedly (as a result of the buyer's changed circumstances). This has left us with a shortfall of £4,000, which we are working hard to address. Take a look at the portrait on the UK Parliament website.
Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas, donations welcome! Please email email@example.com if you can help.
Also in the arena of finance, a Michael Foot Memorial Trust is being set up, into which all of the funds raised will be transferred, in order to streamline procurement and payment processes.
Meanwhile, the design has been finalised, and the stones are currently in the process of being prepared in a local stonemason's yard.
These stones are local granite, and have been kindly donated by Mr Ernie Marshall. Their previous deployment was in Devonport Dockyard, which is particularly appropriate, given Michael's love for, and support of all things Devonport.
In parallel, the construction plans and arrangements are progressing apace, and the words are being finalised, ready for the letters to be incorporated.
We are now moving forward at pace, while at the same time looking to raise a final £4,000 so we can ensure that we do the best possible job in memory of this great Plymothian.
We will issue a further update in October, by which time we are hoping very much to have a launch date.
In the meantime, many thanks again to everyone who has been so supportive.
