Mountaineering and moorland walking
For party leaders or group leaders who want to lead groups occasionally on the moors or in open country below 600 metres then the south west mountain and moorland leader training scheme applies.
This scheme is recognised by the Mountain Leader Training England (MLTE), the national body, and conversion to their scheme is encouraged for anyone who uses their qualification regularly and may operate outside the south west.
If anyone intends making significant professional use of their award such as staff in outdoor education centres then direct entry to the national scheme is recommended.
There are prerequisites for some of these awards and memberships of the national bodies through which regular updates on safety, technical and access arrangements are provided.
The qualifications scheme is managed by the MLTE and you can find details on their website for the walking group leader for open country below 600 metres and the mountain leader award for all areas of the United Kingdom in conditions that are not winter.
Contact with the Outdoor Education Adviser is essential for any other mountaineering activity not covered here or for any winter activity or overseas expedition well before the planned date and generally as a first step in any further planning.
