St Luke's Hospice Silver Anniversary
Community and Outreach staff from the Museum worked with St Luke's Hospice during the first half of 2007 on a special project to help them mark their 25th anniversary. The project culminated in a display in the Museum's Discovery Centre plus a newly commissioned piece of art and information panels for the Hospice.
Staff worked with day care patients, talking to them about their experiences and asking them how they'd like to celebrate its silver anniversary. From their feedback, a decision was made to produce a new painting that could be donated to the Hospice.
Plymouth-based artist, Xiao Bi Li was commissioned. The day care patients had asked for a calming view of the water so as part of his research he took a number of photographs from Turnchapel. These were used to create a panoramic view, which was then used as the basis for his painting.
The painting was displayed alongside information panels exploring the history of the Hospice, nurse's uniforms and letters and cards from the Royal Family in the Museum's Discovery Centre. It now hangs in St Luke's at Pern.
The Museum's outreach staff hope to return to St Luke's in the future to run more reminiscence sessions.
