Traditional craft
The Traditional Craft group are a group of women of all ages and cultures who meet every Friday to share and learn traditional crafts. Working in partnership with the Plymouth and District Racial Equality Council and freelance textile artist Helen Round, the current project involves knitting and crocheting squares to make into children's blankets. The blankets will then be given to local charities to give out to refugee and asylum seekers arriving in the Plymouth and Devon area.
The group holds a Big Knit Day each year which often attracts over 75 knitters from all walks of life - all of whom help to make squares for the blankets.
The group is always looking for new members. Whether you're an expert knitter or a keen novice, and would enjoy making some new friends along the way, you're welcome to join us at the Museum every Friday between 10am and 12 noon.

What participants say about the project:
"It has helped improve understanding around refugees and asylum seekers."
"An opportunity to keep this traditional skill alive."
"It has been very imaginative of the museum to support this cross cultural group."
Previous projects have included a women's unity quilt (on display in our Learning Centre) and cushions for the new World Cultures gallery. Please go to our community projects page for more on these projects.
