Embankment Road to be resurfaced

There will be overnight closures on Embankment Road this Thursday, Friday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to allow for anti-skid surfacing to be laid.

The work is part of pavement and road surface improvements being carried out to add the finishing touches to the £19 million East End Transport Scheme, which opened in November.

To safely and efficiently carry out the remaining surfacing, Embankment Road’s outbound carriageway will be fully closed between Cattedown Roundabout and Langham Place on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 February, from 7pm to 5am.

Anti-skid surfacing, which is laid on top of the normal road surface, will then be applied along the same stretch on Monday 20, Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 February, again between 7pm and 5am each night.

During these works, all Plymstock traffic will be diverted via Exeter Street, Sutton Road, Macadam Road, Maxwell Road and Finnigan Road to Laira Bridge Road. Bus services to Plympton will stop at St Jude’s Road bus stop before heading out of town on Gdynia Way. The outbound bus stops on Laira Bridge Road and Embankment Road opposite the Astor Playing Fields will therefore be temporarily out of use.

Residents affected by the works have been contacted direct by letter. Local diversion routes will be signposted and access to properties maintained at all times.

Plymouth Transport and Highways, the partnership between Plymouth City Council and Amey, planned these final works to start in January 2012 to minimise disruption to local businesses and shoppers in the lead-up to Christmas, as well as regular road users. Traffic flow on Embankment Road has already been reduced by almost 50 per cent at peak times, which means far fewer drivers will be affected. The works are scheduled to be completed by mid-March.

If you have any queries about the works contact the Plymouth Watchman team on 01752 668000 or email plymouth.watchman@amey.co.uk. There is also an opportunity to put questions direct to the East End project team at a ‘Meet the Team’ session being held at the East End Community Resource Centre on Tuesday 21 February from 5pm to 7pm.
