Non-dependant deductions
Non-dependant deductions are the amount we have to reduce your benefit by if a non-dependant lives with you. A non-dependant is someone such as an adult son or adult daughter.
No deductions are made if the claimant or their partner are registered blind or get Attendance Allowance or the care component of Disability Living Allowance.
No deductions are made if the non-dependant is under 18.
Housing Benefit (including Local Housing Allowance)

Aged 25 and over, and
- in receipt of Income Support, or
- Job Seekers Allowance (income based), or
- main phase Employment and Support Allowance (income related). or
- aged 18 or over and not in paid work

Aged 18 or over and in paid work, where
- gross income (before tax and deductions) is less than £122 per week

What if I get both Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit?
If you have a non-dependant and receive Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit, there will be a non-dependant deduction from your Housing Benefit rate and a separate non-dependant deduction from your Council Tax Benefit.
