Plymouth City Council elections
For the notice of election, statement of persons nominated, appointment of election agents and notice of poll please visit our elections 2012 information page.
In Plymouth, representatives are elected in a three year cycle known as 'elections by thirds'. This means that one third of the seats on the Council are up for election each year for three years. The fourth year is generally known as the 'fallow' year which coincides with County Council elections. As a result councillors will serve a term of office of four years. Details of when councillors are due to retire or stand for election can be found on the retirement schedule page.
In the United Kingdom the term local elections refers to county, unitary authority, borough, district, city, town and parish elections. Plymouth City Council is a unitary authority.
To stand for election, candidates must either be registered as an elector or have some other close connection within the electoral area of their candidature, such as their principal place of employment.
