All Plymouth City Council employees can access the latest research in Children and Families Social Care through the Research In Practice website.

Research in Practice aims to support professionals to develop their knowledge, skills, and confidence to apply evidence in their work, improve outcomes and enable people to live good lives.

CAN Do Project

Support for local authority public health teams

You can access online support from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to help you embed evidence-informed decision-making in your daily working practice.

Visit the UKHSA website to find information on:

  • Literature searching and information retrieval on public health topics
  • Enquiry services, including OpenAthens queries - Access to e-journals and BrowZine
  • Access to EBSCO Discovery (a bespoke evidence search tool)
  • Information skills training, including finding the evidence and critical appraisal

OpenAthens eligibility

All local authority public health staff that work directly in in public health are eligible for an OpenAthens account. An OpenAthens account allows you to access a range of resources, included UKHSA subscribed electronic resources (e-journals, EBSCO Discovery and BrowZine), as well as NHS provided content.  

You can register for an OpenAthens account at NICE OpenAthens. Select ‘Public Health Staff in England’ as your Organisation.

South West UKHSA Knowledge and Evidence Specialists

All local authority public health teams have access to a regional UKHSA Knowledge and Evidence Specialist (KES), who can:

  • answer your queries
  • undertake literature searches
  • provide information skills training to you and your team
