It is ONS policy to publish population estimates rounded to at least the nearest hundred persons. Figures may not add up due to this rounding process.
Comparisons with previous estimates
The table below shows that the city's population has grown for the 9th consecutive year, and has increased by 17,700 persons since 2001.
According to ONS estimates the main population change in Plymouth since 2001 has been the growth in the number of people aged 20 to 29. Numbers increased by 12,400 in the 20 to 24 age group and 7,100 in the 25 to 29 age group. Two thirds of the additional number in the 25 to 29 age group were men. The number of people over the age of 60 has increased significantly - by 5,800. There have been smaller increases in people in their 40s (+2,700) and the number aged 0 to 4 years have increased by almost 2,000.
However the numbers in some age groups has fallen. There are 7,900 fewer people in their 30s and 4,800 fewer of school age (5 to 15 years).
