Rights of way improvement plan - consultation

The public rights of way network includes all footpaths, (for use on foot only), bridleways (for use by horses, pedal cycle or on foot) and byways (for use by motor vehicles), in the area which are used for outdoor recreation.

It can be considered to include any off-road path or track crossing parks, woodland, and green open space or open land.

A public right of way tends to be natural or gravel surface and may have such features as kissing gates and stiles. They do not include lit and hard surfaced more formal footpaths, (such as roads or a pavement next to road) or red - surfaced cycle lanes.

The rights of way improvement plan (ROWIP) is a strategic document which looks at how well we have been looking after the paths in Plymouth and sets out how we will look after them in the future. It will include a series of objectives and aims we will work towards and in doing so it will make the outdoors far more accessible to people.

The public rights of way network in Plymouth is an important natural asset and one we are keen to improve upon. We know there are problems with the current network and are taking steps to correct this. As such we are committed to providing a dedicated network of public rights of way and ensuring the provision of public paths where they are needed, promoting its use for the purposes of open air recreation and maintaining and protecting those paths for use by future generations but we need your help!

We need your thoughts and ideas to help us shape the improvement plan. By taking part in this consultation you will be helping us decide what our priorities should be, where we should spend our money and what we should spend it on.
