Safer motorcycling
We will continue to address motorcycle collisions through placing our efforts with a combination of education, training, publicity, engineering and enforcement.
Education
- Working with schools and colleges of further education to promote safer riding.
- Working with local dealers to promote training and safer riding.
- Working with the Devon and Cornwall Safety Camera Partnership (DCSCP) to address the use of excessive and inappropriate speed.
- Work within the Peninsula Motorcycle Forum to promote and share best practice and implement measures to reduce casualties.
Training
- Support advanced rider training, through Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) and their local motorcycling group the Plymouth Advanced Motorcyclists.
- Work with Devon and Cornwall Police to address site specific and local issues.
- Support rider education research and courses.
- Support the Devon and Cornwall Police with the Bikesafe motorcycle course.
Publicity
- Promote related Department of Transport THINK! campaigns, THINK! Bike and conspicuity.
- Work with DCSCP to promote speed awareness.
- Support the Bikesafe initiative and promote local activities.
- Continue with our programme of cinema advertising, that promote positive motorcycling messages.
Engineering
- To carry out an 18 month trial to reduce biker casualties by allowing them to use bus lanes.
- Repair defects on the highway that are a safety concern to motorcyclists through our online defect report form.
- Review collision data and introduce minor improvements where appropriate.
- Ensure that motorcycles are considered as a priority when developing or extending existing networks.
- Clear diesel spills promptly and address surfaces that conflict with safer riding.
Enforcement
- Work with Devon and Cornwall Police on intelligence led interventions regarding motorcycle enforcement.
- Work with DCSCP regarding enforcement of speed limits.
