Self-service in Plymouth libraries

Self-service is now installed in our six largest libraries.

Self-service machines make borrowing and returning items much easier and faster, allowing library staff more time to help with customer enquiries.

Our frequently asked questions below have more information, but if you have any other questions or comments please email library@plymouth.gov.uk.

Library cards

You will need to have your library card with you to use the new machines. If you have mislaid your card. Visit your local library and they will be happy to replace it for you.

Replacement tickets

  • £1.50 for adults
  • 75p for under 18s and the chronically sick or disabled

Frequently asked questions

Why are you putting in self-service equipment?

Self-service will release staff to spend more time with library customers and to run more library activities. It will improve stock security.

What do the self-service machines do?

You can borrow, return and renew books, CDs and DVDs. You can also check your account and any reserved items. You will be able to pay overdue and hire charges with notes or coins.

I don't like self-service in the supermarket, what if I don't like this?

You'll find that self-service in a library is much easier to use.

I like chatting to the staff at the counter, will they still be there?

There will always be a member of staff near the self-service kiosks, so self-service will give you more time to speak to them.

How are you paying for this?

We have borrowed the money on an 'invest to save' scheme. The self-service initiative will allow us to become more efficient and pay the money back.
