Skiing

Snow sports covers winter activities in areas where there is generally snow on a regular basis. Activities therefore are to be found worldwide. For convenience this section also includes similar activities on artificial surfaces.

Snowsport England is the national governing body for most snow sports and details of both the ski course organiser training and the Alpine Ski Leader Award are on their website. There are also many other useful references to training, clubs, events and an online shop for publications, training videos, posters and equipment.

Although it may help by comparison, skiing guidance does not specifically cover winter or ski mountaineering which are specialist activities that require specific information from the Outdoor Education Adviser.

A sample generic risk assessment for managing regular ski activities can be found in the table below. As with all generic information there will be a need to supplement the coverage with specific information about unique features for each event.

Coverage includes the supervision and the accident and emergency arrangements that are commonly found within snow sports activities. Travel, accommodation, evening activities, planned alternatives (sometimes referred to as Plan B activities) and participant's specific details need to be independently considered.
