PC replacement programme frequently asked questions


Is my PC going to be replaced?

If your PC is out of warranty then it will be due for replacement. We have enough money through transferred budgets to replace 1,200 PCs and 200 laptops in this financial year. There will be more than 1,200 PCs going out of warranty between now and April 2008, so not every PC will be replaced before then. Prioritisation will be given on the age of the machine and the technical requirements of the applications that departments need to use. Any that are not replaced in the 2007/08 programme will be prioritised in the first wave of next year's replacement programme.

How do I find out when my PC is going to be replaced?

If your PC is going to be replaced you will be contacted direct by someone from ISD a week before the replacement is going to happen. As users move around and change jobs ISD may not have an accurate list of the user sitting at a machine. In this case you may not get a direct email but since the programme will be done on an office-by-office, site-by-site basis, colleagues of yours should get an email. In the last resort, purple stickers will be placed on machines a couple of days before replacement and engineers will be on site in preparation to check for software requirements.

What preparation (if any) do I need to do before the PC is replaced?

It is important that you read the PC replacement preparation pages to see what you need to do before your PC is replaced.

Do I need to be there when the PC is replaced?

No - however we recommend you clear your desk, including any photographs attached to your PC. Please also ensure the area around the desk is clear and safe for the engineers to carry out their work.

What happens to my old PC?

A company has been appointed to carry out the installation and disposal of the PCs. This company takes all PCs away and the hard drives are wiped, and then they dispose of the hardware. As part of the agreement we have, the machines are re-used or the parts are recycled.

Will anyone be there when my new PC is installed to help me get started?

The engineer who installs your PC will give you guidance on adjusting your monitor height, screen settings and make sure you are happy logging into the new PC. Once you have logged into the network, there are IT champions in each workplace who have been trained on any changes with Windows XP and are there to help you. There is also help available on the staff room with links to useful documents (visit the IT training help and support pages). If you have problems there will be a member of the Service Desk team on hand, and if you still need help you should call the ISD Service Desk on 4424.

What is an 'IT Champion' and how do I find out who the IT Champion is in my area?

An IT Champion is a member of staff who has volunteered to assist with the PC replacement programme in their area and has had training on the upgraded system. You will be informed who the IT champion is in your area before your PC is replaced so you can contact them when needed.

If I have any problems with my new PC who do I call?

In the first instance speak to the workplace IT champion and ask them for help, if they are unable to provide assistance then call the ISD Service Desk on 4424.

Will there be any training on how to use my new Windows XP PC?

How to I set up a printer on my new PC?

When you log into your new PC you will not be able to print any documents until you have set up a printer. Instructions for how to do this can be found on the Windows XP help page.

All my shortcuts have disappeared on my new PC, what do I do?

If you have not copied the shortcuts from your old PC they are lost forever. See the desktop shortcuts page for instructions on how to copy your desktop shortcuts before your old PC is removed.

When I open a Word attachment from my email, it opens in reading layout, how do I stop this from happening?

The default setting for Outlook 2003 is to open a Word 2003 document in reading layout. To amend this setting see the document 'turn off reading layout (Word 2003)' on the Word help page.

Some of my emails have shortcuts on them, why is this?
