Cann Woods is located in the north of Plymouth, between the residential areas of Whitleigh and Southway. The site covers 23.5ha and is owned and managed by the Plymouth City Council Park department. The site contains a number of habitats including woodland, scrubs and grassland with the grassland being managed as wildflower meadows.
There is a network of non-designated footpaths and rides across the site which continue into the adjacent Whitleigh Wood Local Nature Reserve. Cann Woods can be accessed by public transport, with bus stops at Milford Lane and Tamerton Foliot Road.
Cann Woods Reserve has been dedicated to the memory of Dr Andy Stevens who sadly died in 2005. He played a pivotal role in advocating the need to protect Cann Woods and in securing the acquisition of the land as part of a planning agreement.
Andy worked as Nature Conservation Officer with the council for over 10 years and worked tirelessly to champion the protection of the cities wildlife. His work leaves a significant legacy in the city's Local Nature Reserves and one of the most comprehensive ecological databases of any urban area in the UK.
For more detailed information on access and the management of Cann Woods Local Nature Reserve refer to the Management Plan below:
